Over April school vacation, we held a Youth Leadership Academy for middle school and elementary aged students that taught them skills in leadership, public speaking, and collaboration. The students participated in a wide variety of activities to hone these skills such as coming up with elevator speeches, engaging in a mythical animal presentation, working together for a marshmallow + spaghetti tower as well as a business plan, and immersing into discussion about leadership qualities.
On June 22nd, we held our annual Information Night for prospective members to get a chance to learn more about what we do and what our mission is. We had a successful night with 7 people in attendance! Mayor Jon Mitchell held his annual State of the City Address where he discussed plans with the railroad, the offshore wind industry, road infrastructure, improvement in crime/graduation rates and using the ARPA funds to invest in the Zeiterion theater!
The annual New Bedford Half Marathon was held on March 20th, 2022. Various MYC members volunteered in pouring as well as handing out water to runners at the final water station!
To commemorate their service as liaisons for the MYC between the New Bedford city council and school committee, we held a special meeting to celebrate Debora Cohelo, Josh Amaral, and Joseph Lopes. We wish them luck in their future endeavors and will miss them!
Our annual coat drive was held on Saturday, January 14th beginning at 11 AM and ending at 3 PM. The weather was perfect to hold it as temperatures dropped down to 10°F which made for a great time for families to receive free winter garments!
Amidst a pandemic as well as a November election to determine the members set to fill the seats of the City Council and School Committee, the Mayor's Youth Council created a video compiling the 2021 candidates in summarizing their priorities given the opportunity to be apart of their respective organizations.
This was an electronic questionnaire distributed by the Mayor's Youth Council to students and faculty of New Bedford High School to gauge the population's interests in promoting as well as identifying ways to better the school's environment. The survey received over 300 responses and was presented by a liaison to the School Committee as well as the mayor of New Bedford! Respondents primarily expressed concerns over the renovated bathrooms and the school's windows.
In partnership with the the 84, a movement dedicated towards fighting youth tobacco usage in Massachusetts, the Mayor's Youth Council focused on building community connections through holding a pen pal program that fosters connections between seniors and youth through the times of self-isolation. The project was a success garnering 20 youth and 20 seniors to engage in the exchange of letters.
2020 had a drastic impact on our annual coat drive, so to keep our members and its participants safe, we organized a coat drive for the elderly at Tripp Towers! Through generous donations with the help of GiftsToGive, we were able to give about 30 coats to help those in need during the winter season!
With each year welcoming new high school seniors, they oftentimes have trouble navigating through the college application journey so the Mayor's Youth Council teamed up with experts in the process to present a College 101 Forum!
