"YWCA works every day to eliminate racism and empower women. Through advocacy and local programming, we create real change for women, families and communities." The YWCA generously provides their building for us to congregate there for every one of our meetings and we are incredibly thankful for all the help they've provided to us in assisting most of our projects!
As stated on their website, "The City Council is the Legislative branch of government for the City of New Bedford. As such, the Council has authority to create and adopt all laws (ordinances) which govern the City." We've actively collaborated with the City Council by attending their meetings, inviting a liaison for both organizations, and hosting election forums.
Chaired by Mayor of New Bedford, Jon Mitchell, the School Committee holds responsibility over the New Bedford school system and makes decisions that dictate the direction it moves in. They meet regularly each month to go over timelines, budgets, and progress checks. As the Mayor's Youth Council, we have been present at their meetings as well as have delegated a liaison that brings any of our concerns and projects to the committee.
"Participants will be given the opportunity to make real change at the local level for how they want to see New Bedford’s parks, trails, and beaches utilized as well as assisting in the development of recreational opportunities for young people and families in our city and beyond." We recently met together along with the mayor for a Q&A session and are planning an upcoming project relating to scholarship/career readiness! The council is currently looking for members so feel free to apply if interested!
